1 Samuel 20:43
"At last Jonathan said to David, "Go in peace, for we have sworn loyalty to each other in the Lord's name."
Reading 1 Samuel 18-19-20
Today we will do a character analysis of the three men in these three chapters.
DAVID
David has just killed Goliath and has now been taken directly to King Saul's palace. He has been promoted from simple shepherd boy to a Military Leader. Scripture records that he went directly to the palace still in his shepherds clothes. David did not have the privilege to return home, grab his stuff or say goodbye. God is moving David one step closer to his God given position. David chooses God.
JONATHAN
Jonathan is the son of King Saul but recognizes the anointing on David's life and makes a covenant of loyalty and support for him. David's emotions are not recorded but the two of them become soul friends bonded together with God. Jonathan humbly acknowledges David's power and position given by God and understands his position has not been anointed like David's. Jonathan chooses life.
KING SAUL
After David kills Goliath King Saul promotes him to a Military Leaders position with responsibility and authority. David is successful with every battle assignment and instead of praise King Saul chooses to hate, be angry and be jealous of David. King Saul is so consumed with his hatred, anger and jealousy he allows it to lead to premeditated murder of David. King Saul chooses the direction of death.
APPLICATION:
David received God's call on his life and he joyfully and confidently followed God immediately.
When God calls you to something are you willing to answer YES LORD! and follow His call on your life?
Lamentations 3:23 "Great is God's faithfulness. His mercies begin fresh each morning."
Today is a new and fresh day. Be encouraged, have courage and follow God's will for your life.
Jonathan saw what God was doing in David's life and chose to rejoice for and with David. Jonathan became a faithful godly friend as in Proverbs 17:17 "A friend loves at all times."
Are you a good friend to other Christians? A you a friend of Jesus Christ?
Lamentations 3:23 "Great is God's faithfulness. His mercies begin fresh each morning."
Start today with the attitude of I'M GOING TO BE A BETTER GODLY FRIEND TO OTHERS and TO GOD.
Saul was so full of pride he allowed anger, hate and jealousy to take root in his life. The roots he allowed to grow into his heart made him want to kill. Saul chose darkness and death over light and life.
Do you have any hate, anger or jealousy in your heart?
Right now is the time to repent and be restored back to life.
Psalm 30:2-4 "O LORD my God, I cried to you for help, and you restored my health. You brought me up from the grave, O LORD. You kept me from falling into the pit of death. Sing to the LORD all you godly ones! Praise his holy name."
This week pray through these examples, read and memorize the Scriptures and repent and be restored. Pray with thanksgiving for the Lord's mercy and grace in your life.
